Sweet PDZ Horse Stall Refresher is an all-natural zeolite mineral that captures, neutralizes and eliminates harmful levels of ammonia and odors in horse stalls, barns, coops and small-animal habitats. Instead of covering odor with a scent, it traps the ammonia given off by urine and waste at the source — keeping the air in the stall fresher and the footing drier for horse and handler alike.

It comes in two particle sizes, both 40 lb. Granular is gritty, larger and essentially dust-free, for hassle-free application in the stall, easy clean-out over larger areas, and use in litter boxes and small-animal habitats. Classic Powder, the original 1983 product, has a smaller particle that spreads easily over problem areas and absorbs ammonia quickly — the one to reach for when a specific wet spot is the trouble.

How Sweet PDZ Works

Sweet PDZ is a mineral called zeolite — specifically clinoptilolite, a naturally occurring mineral formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. Two properties do the work. The first is adsorption: ammonia gas molecules stick to the surface of the Sweet PDZ granule and are held there. When the granules later dry out, that ammonia is released as nitrogen, a beneficial nutrient for gardens, compost and soil.

The second is cation exchange capacity. A sodium or potassium cation in the zeolite hydrolyzes and swaps places with ammonium, which then becomes part of the granule. This exchange works because Sweet PDZ granules are always holding some water inside their crystalline structure — which is also why moisture does not reduce their effectiveness.

Sweet PDZ Is Not Lime

Barn lime is calcium carbonate; it has neither of those mineral functions, so at best it covers an ammonia odor rather than chemically changing it. Hydrated lime is caustic and hazardous to handle or breathe. Sweet PDZ is neither — it is a pH-neutral zeolite that is safe for people, pets and the planet, and it neutralizes odor instead of masking it.

A Full-Circle Green-Earth Mineral

Sweet PDZ is non-toxic, organic, recyclable and compostable. It is borrowed from the earth to capture noxious odors, and it can be returned to the earth as a beneficial soil conditioner in compost and gardens, where it holds and slowly releases ammonium nitrogen, potassium, magnesium and trace elements.

Sweet PDZ works on its own — there is no need to mix it with any other product.

Strip wet bedding and manure from the stall and let the floor surface dry as much as practical.
Sprinkle Sweet PDZ directly onto wet spots and high-traffic areas with a feed scoop, concentrating it where urine and moisture accumulate.
Cover with fresh bedding and repeat at each cleaning. It performs with all types of bedding and on concrete, wood, rubber-mat and dirt floors.
Safe to apply while horses, livestock and pets are in the stall or habitat.
For litter boxes and small-animal habitats, mix the granular form into the litter or bedding; for chicken coops on the deep-litter method, apply 1–2 times per week and each time fresh bedding is added.
At clean-out, add the used bedding to compost or spread it on gardens and fields. Sweet PDZ is pH neutral and releases the captured ammonia slowly as beneficial nitrogen.
