Hemp hurd is the soft, absorbent inner core of the hemp stalk. Compared with traditional wood shavings, it has a much lower carbon-to-nitrogen ratio—about 100:1 versus roughly 400:1—and contains less lignin. These qualities allow beneficial microbes to break it down more quickly and reduce the need for extra nitrogen during composting.

Hemp hurd is also light and naturally airy, helping a compost pile hold moisture without compacting as easily as wood shavings. Better airflow, moisture balance, and faster decomposition help create a rich, crumbly finished compost that improves soil structure.
