HealthiStraw Bedding

HealthiStraw · now at Hatchet Farm

Bedding that breathes.

Grade-A Canadian wheat straw, cut and cleaned into bedding that pulls moisture down and leaves the surface dry underfoot — virtually dust-free, for the stall and for the coop.

Pick your bag

Three cuts.
One is yours.

Same wheat straw, same cleaning — the cut length is what changes. Short for absorbency in a coop, long for loft and warmth, mid-length underneath a horse.

For coops & small animals

FarmStraw Fine

The short cut — maximum absorbency and softness, for a clean bed in an enclosed coop or hutch.

  • Fine cut for maximum absorption and softness
  • Excellent odour control
  • Chickens, ducks, turkeys, rabbits and small livestock
  • Virtually dust-free, from 100% non-GMO Grade-A wheat straw

For coops, hutches & pens

FarmStraw Coarse

The long cut traps air — so it stays fluffy and insulating through cold weather while still absorbing and controlling odour.

  • Coarse cut for loft, insulation and warmth
  • Good absorbency with strong odour control
  • Chickens, ducks, turkeys, goats, sheep and pigs
  • Virtually dust-free, from 100% non-GMO Grade-A wheat straw

For horses

EquineStraw

Mid-cut, with a cushioned surface that encourages a horse to lie down — and lighter than shavings when you muck out.

  • Virtually dust-free — HealthiStraw reports less coughing and nasal discharge
  • Lighter than shavings for faster mucking and sifting
  • Foaling stalls, trailers, senior and sensitive horses

How it’s made

Not just chopped straw.

Ordinary straw is cut and baled. HealthiStraw runs every strand through a multi-step process that opens the stem up — which is what turns a stiff stalk into something soft, thirsty and virtually dust-free.

01Cut

To a consistent length for the animal it’s made for.

02Split

Opening the hollow stem so it can take on water.

03Bend

Breaking the stiffness — this is where the softness comes from.

04Clean

An all-natural wash that lifts out dust, dirt, seed and mould.

Moisture is drawn downward into the bed and absorbed from the bottom up, so the top layer stays dry and odour stays down.

Before you buy

Straight answers.

How big is a bag, and how far does it go?

All three cuts come the same way: a 3 cu ft compressed bag that opens out to roughly 10–12 cu ft of usable bedding — HealthiStraw puts that at about 25% more usable volume than many comparable bedding products.

How far that goes depends on the animal, the season and how much cushioning you want. One opened bag covers roughly:

150sq ft at 1″
75sq ft at 2″
35sq ft at 4″
25sq ft at 6″

Volume and coverage figures from HealthiStraw. Pull wet spots and manure daily and top up as you go.

Is it treated with anything? Is it certified organic?

No — HealthiStraw does not carry an organic certification, and we won’t claim one. What they do state is that the straw is 100% non-GMO Grade-A wheat from the Canadian prairies, cleaned by an all-natural process, and tested regularly for herbicide and pesticide residue.

HealthiStraw reports those tests come back either on par with certified organic straw, or detecting one to two chemicals at the lowest measurable level — well under government limits.

Fine, Coarse or EquineStraw — which do I want?

FarmStraw Fine is the short cut. It packs down softer and soaks up the most, so it suits enclosed coops, hutches and smaller animals.

FarmStraw Coarse is the long cut. It traps more air, so it stays fluffy and insulating — the one to reach for in a pen or a coop heading into winter.

EquineStraw sits in between and is built for horses: absorbency plus a cushioned surface that encourages a horse to lie down, light enough to make daily mucking quicker.

All three are the same washed, non-GMO Grade-A wheat straw — only the cut length differs.

Is it safe for chickens and rabbits?

Yes. HealthiStraw FarmStraw is made for poultry, rabbits, goats, sheep, pigs and other homestead animals. Because it is washed and virtually dust-free, it is a common choice for enclosed coops and hutches where airborne dust from ordinary bedding tends to collect.

What do I do with it once it’s soiled?

Compost it. Wheat straw is a renewable agricultural by-product and HealthiStraw states it breaks down up to 4× faster than wood-based bedding — so used bedding turns into something you can work into a garden or landscape bed rather than something you have to get rid of.

Is this the same as HealthiStraw GardenStraw?

No. GardenStraw is a long-cut straw mulch for garden beds, with an extra seed-filtration step so stray wheat seed doesn’t sprout in your rows. It’s a different product for a different job — we stock it too, but the two bags on this page are the bedding.
