Feed this ration along with good-quality hay at a rate of 1.5 to 2.0 lb per 100 lb of bodyweight per day, or the equivalent amount of pasture, to support proper digestion and overall condition. When transitioning from a hay-only diet to a combined hay and feed program, introduce the feed gradually over a period of approximately one week to allow the horse’s digestive system to adjust. Divide the total daily feed into two to three meals per day for optimal nutrient utilization.
Daily feeding amounts should be based on the horse’s workload and body condition, feeding approximately 0.5 to 0.7 lb per 100 lb of bodyweight for horses at maintenance, 0.7 to 0.9 lb for horses in light exercise or breeding stallions, 0.9 to 1.1 lb for horses in moderate work, and 1.2 to 1.5 lb for horses in heavy exercise. Adjust feeding rates as needed to maintain the desired body condition and performance level.
Fresh, clean water should be available at all times, and free-choice salt should always be offered. Horses that have been exercised should be properly cooled out and rehydrated before feeding and before being allowed access to unlimited water. Store feed in a clean, cool, and dry area protected from insects and rodents, and do not feed products that are hot, moldy, or show signs of contamination.
