Strategy® Healthy Edge® Horse Feed is designed to be fed alongside good-quality hay or pasture to support horses at a variety of activity levels and life stages. Begin feeding based on your horse’s body weight and lifestyle category. After observing the horse over time, the feeding rate may be increased or decreased by approximately 10% to achieve and maintain the desired body condition and weight.
Always provide a minimum amount of hay or equivalent pasture daily. Horses weighing 600 lbs should receive at least 7.0 lbs of hay per day, while 800-lb horses require 9.5 lbs, 1,000-lb horses need 12.0 lbs, and 1,200-lb horses should receive 14.5 lbs daily. If additional hay is fed beyond these minimum amounts, reduce the amount of Strategy® Healthy Edge® Horse Feed by 1 pound for every additional 2 pounds of hay provided.
For horses at maintenance with minimum activity, feed approximately 2.0 to 3.75 lbs per day, depending on body weight. Horses at average maintenance activity typically require 2.75 to 5.0 lbs per day, while those with elevated activity may need 3.25 to 6.25 lbs per day.
Horses in light work generally require higher energy intake and should be fed approximately 4.0 to 7.75 lbs per day, depending on body weight. Horses in moderate work have greater calorie demands and may require 5.5 to 10.75 lbs per day to support performance and condition.
Mares in early gestation (first 250 days) typically require 2.75 to 5.5 lbs per day, depending on body weight. During late gestation (last 90 days), nutritional needs increase, and feeding rates should be raised to approximately 4.25 to 8.0 lbs per day. Breeding stallions generally require elevated feeding levels, typically ranging from 4.75 to 9.5 lbs per day, based on size and condition.
To meet nutrient requirements, do not feed less than 0.3 lbs per 100 lbs of body weight per day. If a horse gains excessive weight at this minimum feeding level, transition to Enrich Plus® Ration Balancing Feed to provide essential nutrients without excess calories.
Feeding rates may vary based on size, age, temperament, health status, forage quality, climate, and workload. Feed at regular times each day, with at least two feedings daily; three smaller feedings are preferred when possible. Horses should be fed in a natural position from troughs placed at normal head height or lower. Do not feed free-choice, and take steps to prevent rapid consumption of feed.
Reduce or delay feeding if a horse is hot, excited, experiencing pain, fever, or diarrhea, and consult a veterinarian if problems arise. Always provide 1.0 to 1.2 lbs of good-quality hay per 100 lbs of body weight daily, along with free-choice salt and continuous access to fresh, clean water. Maintain an effective parasite control program, ensure routine dental examinations, and consult your veterinarian regularly.
Any feed changes should be made gradually over a 7–10 day period. Mix the new feed with the previous ration, slowly increasing the amount of Strategy® Healthy Edge® Horse Feed while decreasing the old feed. Changes in feeding rate should not exceed 1.0 lb per horse per day.
Store feed in a dry, well-ventilated area, protected from rodents and insects. Do not feed moldy or insect-infested feed, as it may cause illness, reduced performance, or death.
