Innovation Built on 100 Years of Scientific Research & Equine Expertise

It took more than 100 years of industry-leading research and innovation to build today's Purina® Omolene® horse feed lineup.

Omolene® 100 Active Pleasure Horse Feed is formulated to be fed alongside good-quality hay or pasture to support pleasure horses in maintenance or light to moderate work. Begin feeding based on your horse’s body weight and activity level using the recommended amounts as a starting point. After observing your horse over time, the feeding rate may be gradually increased or decreased to achieve and maintain the desired body condition and weight.

When feeding with hay or pasture, provide a minimum amount of forage daily. Horses weighing approximately 800 lbs should receive at least 9.5 lbs of hay per day, 1,000-lb horses should receive 12.0 lbs, and 1,200-lb horses should receive 14.5 lbs. If feeding more hay than these minimums, the amount of Omolene® 100 fed may be reduced while maintaining proper body condition.

For horses at maintenance or in light work, typical feeding rates range from approximately 3.0 lbs per day for an 800-lb horse, 3.5 lbs per day for a 1,000-lb horse, and 4.25 lbs per day for a 1,200-lb horse. Horses in moderate work have increased energy demands and may require approximately 3.5 to 5.25 lbs per day, depending on body weight.

To meet nutrient requirements, do not feed less than 0.3 lbs per 100 lbs of body weight per day (equivalent to 3 lbs per day for a 1,000-lb horse). If a horse gains excessive weight at this minimum feeding level, transition from Omolene® 100 to Purina® Enrich Plus® Ration Balancing Horse Feed to provide essential nutrients without excess calories.

Best Feeding Practices

Feeding rates may vary based on size, age, temperament, health status, forage quality, climate, and activity level. Feed at regular times each day, with at least two feedings daily. Do not feed more than 0.5 lbs per 100 lbs of body weight per meal, and do not feed free-choice. Take steps to prevent rapid consumption of feed.

Reduce or delay feeding if a horse is hot, excited, showing pain, has a fever, or is experiencing diarrhea, and consult a veterinarian if problems arise. Always feed a minimum of 1.0 to 1.2 lbs of good-quality, clean hay per 100 lbs of body weight daily, or the equivalent in pasture. Provide fresh, clean water at all times and ensure horses have free-choice access to salt. Maintain routine dental care, parasite control, and regular veterinary oversight.

Changing to Omolene® 100

Any feed changes should be made gradually over 7 to 10 days. Mix the new feed with the old, slowly increasing the amount of Omolene® 100 while decreasing the previous feed. Changes in feeding rate should not exceed 1.0 lb per horse per day.

Caution and Storage

Store feed in a dry, well-ventilated area protected from rodents and insects. Do not feed moldy or insect-infested feed, as it may cause illness, reduced performance, or death. Feeding added selenium resulting in total dietary levels exceeding 0.3 ppm is prohibited.
