The following feeding directions are guidelines to maintain desired body condition and performance. Adjust feeding rates based on body condition and activity level. Divide the total daily amount into two or more meals per day and feed with good quality hay or pasture equivalent at the rate of 1.0–1.75 lb per 100 lb bodyweight to provide a minimum of 50% of the diet from forage. Performance horses may benefit from more frequent feeding.
Clean, fresh water should be available at all times. Horses should be properly cooled out and re-hydrated before feeding and before access to unlimited water.
Feeding Rates (per 100 lb bodyweight):
- Maintenance Horses: 0.25 – 0.50 lb
- Light Exercise: 0.50 – 0.75 lb
- Moderate Exercise: 0.75 – 1.00 lb
- Heavy Exercise: 1.00 – 1.50 lb
- Pregnancy: 0.50 – 0.75 lb
- Early Lactation (foaling to 3 months): 1.00 – 1.50 lb
- Late Lactation (3 months to weaning): 0.75 – 1.00 lb
- Weanlings: 1.50 – 2.00 lb
- Yearlings: 0.75 – 1.50 lb
*Based on a 1,000 lb mature body weight. Do not exceed 15 lb of SafeChoice® Special Care per horse per day.
