Begin feeding Equine Senior® Active Horse Feed according to your horse’s body weight and lifestyle. After observing your horse’s body condition, energy level, and overall health over time, the feeding rate may be gradually increased or decreased to maintain ideal weight and condition.

Always provide a minimum amount of high-quality hay or equivalent pasture daily to support digestive health. An 800-pound horse should receive at least 9.5 pounds of hay or pasture per day. A 1,000-pound horse should receive at least 12.0 pounds daily, and a 1,200-pound horse should receive at least 14.5 pounds per day. If feeding more hay than the recommended minimum, reduce the feeding rate of Equine Senior® Active by 1 pound for every additional 2 pounds of hay fed.

For an 800-pound horse at maintenance with average activity, feed approximately 2.75 pounds per day. Increase to about 4.25 pounds daily for light work, 6.00 pounds daily for moderate work, and 7.50 pounds daily for heavy work. During early gestation (first 250 days), feed approximately 3.00 pounds per day, and during late gestation (last 90 days), increase to about 4.50 pounds per day. A breeding stallion of this weight may require approximately 5.50 pounds daily.

For a 1,000-pound horse, feed about 3.50 pounds daily at maintenance, 5.50 pounds for light work, 7.25 pounds for moderate work, and 9.25 pounds for heavy work. Early gestation requires approximately 3.75 pounds per day, while late gestation requires about 5.50 pounds daily. A breeding stallion of this size typically requires about 6.50 pounds per day.

For a 1,200-pound horse, feed approximately 4.25 pounds daily at maintenance, 6.50 pounds for light work, 8.75 pounds for moderate work, and 11.00 pounds for heavy work. Early gestation requires about 4.50 pounds per day, and late gestation approximately 6.50 pounds daily. A breeding stallion at this weight may require around 7.75 pounds per day.

To meet nutrient requirements, do not feed less than 0.3 pounds per 100 pounds of body weight per day. If your horse gains excessive weight at the minimum feeding rate, replace Equine Senior® Active with Purina® Strategy® Healthy Edge® horse feed or a Purina® Ration Balancing Feed to maintain balanced nutrition with fewer calories.

A 4-pound meal of Equine Senior® Active supplies a full serving of Outlast® Supplement to support gastric comfort.

Important Feeding Guidelines

Feeding rates vary based on age, metabolism, temperament, health condition, forage quality, climate, and activity level. Feed at regular times, at least twice daily, and divide the total daily amount into multiple meals. Do not feed more than 0.5 pounds per 100 pounds of body weight per meal and do not feed free-choice. Take precautions to prevent rapid consumption.

Always feed a minimum of 1.0 to 1.2 pounds of good-quality, clean hay per 100 pounds of body weight daily, along with unlimited access to fresh, clean water and free-choice salt.

Reduce or delay feeding if the horse is hot, excited, in pain, running a fever, or experiencing diarrhea. Consult your veterinarian if any concerns arise. Maintain routine dental care, parasite control, and overall health management. Horses sensitive to dietary carbohydrates should be managed under the guidance of a veterinarian or equine nutritionist.

When changing to Equine Senior® Active, transition gradually over 7 to 10 days by mixing the new feed with the old ration and slowly increasing the new feed while decreasing the previous feed. Changes in feeding rate should not exceed 1 pound per day per horse.

Caution

Follow label directions carefully. Feeding added selenium resulting in total diet levels exceeding 0.3 ppm is prohibited.

Store in a dry, well-ventilated area protected from rodents and insects. Do not feed moldy or insect-infested feed, as it may cause illness, performance loss, or death.

Wash hands after handling feed. Not for human consumption. Clean feed and water containers regularly.
