Feed according to the horse’s body condition, body weight, and activity level, dividing the total daily amount into two or more meals per day. When fed with hay or pasture access, horses at maintenance typically require about 4–6 lb per day for an 800 lb horse, 5–7 lb for a 1,000 lb horse, and 6–8 lb for a 1,200 lb horse, while horses in light work may require approximately 6–8 lb, 7–10 lb, and 8–12 lb per day, respectively. For horses of other weights, feed at a rate of 0.5% to 0.75% of body weight for maintenance and 0.75% to 1.0% of body weight for light work. When fed as a sole ration with no hay or pasture, maintenance feeding levels increase to about 10–12 lb per day for an 800 lb horse, 12–14 lb for a 1,000 lb horse, and 14–16 lb for a 1,200 lb horse, with light work horses requiring approximately 12–14 lb, 14–16 lb, and 16–18 lb per day, respectively. For other body weights when fed as a sole ration, provide 1.25% to 1.50% of body weight for maintenance and 1.5% to 1.75% of body weight for light work.

Always ensure clean, fresh water is available, and allow horses to be properly cooled out and re-hydrated after exercise before feeding.
